Our Services - Investment Management - Portfolio Management

Heartwood offer a range of discretionary portfolio management services. We offer five model portfolios round which actual client portfolios are tailored:

Funds based investment services
All of the above models are implemented primarily by investing in funds managed by third parties selected by us on the basis of their proven ability to consistently add value relative to the performance of both their peers or any index chosen for comparison. This philosophy explicitly recognises that no single individual or organisation can excel in all areas of investment and that specialists should outperform generalists within their area of expertise

In addition, we do not measure performance solely on the basis of returns generated. We also measure the level of risk taken by a fund manager relative to their peer group or appropriate comparison index. Sometimes, depending confidence in the global economy and our forecast asset returns, we may choose to favour a lower return, lower risk approach over a higher risk higher return one or vice versa.

In our portfolios you may find investments managed by some of the biggest names in the financial service industry. However, our search for investment excellence frequently leads us towards investment “boutiques” owned and managed by their employees who have a particular focus on one asset class or area of the market. We also ensure that there is no needless duplication of investment policy between our chosen investment managers.

We can access external fund managers services at considerably less cost than an individual investor normally can on their own. This is a direct reflection of both our purchasing power as a “professional investor” and the fact that we neither seek nor receive initial commissions for investing in external funds.

Fund wrapped investment
Where appropriate we are able to offer our investment approaches wrapped, in part or in full, within an investment fund wrapper. This approach can have significant advantages for investors regardless of the size of their portfolio.

For modest investments, fund wrapped portfolios offer:

  • Lower investment costs
  • Greater portfolio diversity
  • Simpler accounting

For larger portfolios additional benefits may be secured as follows:

  • Less constraint on portfolio management as a result of trading being at the fund rather than personal level
  • Availability of capital gains tax exemptions to offset against gains outside the portfolio
  • The ability to draw additional 'tax free income' in retirement by using capital gains tax allowances not used in the management of the portfolio

Please do not hesitate to contact us for a full description of our services or to arrange an appointment to discuss how these may help you meet your own financial objectives.

Your attention is drawn to the important notice, which contains investment warnings and information on the scope of our advice on packaged products, such as investment funds.
